# Prototype atlas data ## Comparative listening-region review, October 17, 2026 Authored musical-region data is stored separately from base-map geography. Geographic input licences, source queries and attribution are retained in `research/recognized-regions/geography-provenance.json` and adjacent source-provenance records. - Natural Earth ADM1, physical regions and fine country/island geometry: pinned public-domain revision `ca96624a56bd078437bca8184e78163e5039ad19`; actual file hashes are preserved in the research provenance. - Northern Basque boundary: IGN **ADMIN EXPRESS COG 2026**, EPCI `200067106`, direct Géoplateforme WFS; **Licence Ouverte / Open Licence 2.0**. Attribution: IGN, ADMIN EXPRESS COG 2026. See `research/recognized-regions/geography/northern-basque-country-ign-provenance.json`. The earlier combined geo.api.gouv.fr download is an unused reference and is not the source of the published boundary. - United States metropolitan/Navajo scaffolds: official US Census geography, public-domain federal source; Canadian Inuit Nunangat: Government of Canada, Open Government Licence–Canada. Brazil metropolitan scaffolds: IBGE; downloads and proxy limits are recorded in the Americas dossier and geographic provenance. - Settlement coverage audit: **GeoNames, CC BY 4.0**, pinned `cities500.zip` hash in `coverage-audit.json`. Original small-community land envelopes address omitted reference islets; they are declared editorial approximations, not surveyed shorelines. - Antarctic facility coordinate/operator facts: **Wikidata, CC0**, stored query and hash in `antarctic-stations-wikidata-provenance.json`. Original finite personnel-site components extend already-qualified geographic introductions; they do not create station-based musical cultures or assert current occupancy of every facility. COMNAP's noncommercial bulk coordinates were not copied into these commercial-eligible assets. Research citations remain attributed and linked; articles and source text were not copied wholesale. Informed boundary and listening judgments remain editable project work. Existing genre heatmaps, wiki articles and account records are independent of this regional publication. Worldwide contemporary listening-region profiles, inferred static boundaries, finer Natural Earth minor-island land and independent GeoNames coverage checks are documented in [research/listening-regions/DATA_SOURCES.md](research/listening-regions/DATA_SOURCES.md). These supplement authored regions, preserve the native reference files, and require no external map service during browsing. The prototype serves its satellite imagery, geography, and map-label glyphs from this application's `public` directory. The map does not contact MapTiler, Mapbox, Google Maps, or a public tile server. There is no mapping API key. The prepared atlas can be used locally without an internet connection after dependencies and assets have been downloaded. YouTube buttons open external search results; those links require internet access. Attribution links likewise open their source websites when selected. No audio is downloaded or redistributed by this prototype. ## Geography The photographic surface is NASA Blue Marble Shaded Relief and Bathymetry (MODIS), prepared separately as local JPEG tiles. See [SATELLITE_SOURCES.md](SATELLITE_SOURCES.md) and `public/satellite/manifest.json` for source, resolution, attribution, use terms, and snapshot checksums. Borders, rivers, names, and cities described below remain independent vector layers above this imagery. The displayed lakes come from the imagery; lake geometry remains in the prepared reference dataset. [Natural Earth](https://www.naturalearthdata.com/) 1:10 million geography supplies countries, administrative regions, rivers, lakes, and 7,342 populated places. **1:10m means scale 1:10,000,000, not ten-metre accuracy.** These are generalized atlas features; minor streams, streets, buildings, and comprehensive town coverage are outside this dataset. - [Upstream GeoJSON repository](https://github.com/nvkelso/natural-earth-vector/tree/ca96624a56bd078437bca8184e78163e5039ad19/geojson) - Pinned revision: `ca96624a56bd078437bca8184e78163e5039ad19` - Source layers: `ne_10m_admin_0_countries`, `ne_10m_admin_1_states_provinces`, `ne_10m_populated_places_simple`, `ne_10m_rivers_lake_centerlines`, `ne_10m_lakes`. - [Natural Earth usage terms](https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/): public domain, including commercial use. Credit is still provided in the map. Natural Earth's boundary choices and place names are inherited as supplied. This prototype has not performed an editorial review of disputed boundaries, current administrative changes, or population estimates. Music-history test content is kept separate from reference geography. `scripts/prepare-geography.mjs` downloads those pinned files, removes unused attributes, and uses mapshaper's topology-aware simplification with `keep-shapes` to reduce geometry. Region polygons are converted to shared internal boundary lines within each country, avoiding repeated coastline and country-border transfers. Region names remain in the separate label/search records. Source hashes, output hashes, output sizes, and counts are recorded in `public/data/manifest.json`. Raw downloads are cached in the operating-system temporary directory. Rebuild from the project root with: ```sh npm ci node scripts/prepare-geography.mjs ``` Use the checked-in `package-lock.json` with `npm ci` so the geography build uses the same mapshaper version. The initial build was prepared with Node.js 24.15.0 and mapshaper 0.7.87. Source revisions remain fixed unless the preparation script is deliberately updated. A normal application build uses the already-prepared files; it does not redownload geography. Reproducibility was verified on October 15, 2026: an independent build into a temporary directory matched all eight published geography/search files and all six glyph files byte for byte, without modifying the working assets. This verifies the pinned inputs and processing on the installed runtime; it is not a promise of identical locale collation across every future Node.js version. The prepared geography and search files total **9,202,921 bytes (8.78 MiB) uncompressed**, or **2,253,588 bytes (2.15 MiB) when individually gzip-compressed**. HTTP transfer size depends on the server's compression configuration. They contain 258 countries, 4,589 region-label positions, 7,342 cities, 1,454 nonempty river features, 1,355 lakes, and 12,189 searchable country/region/city records. The 4,596 source region polygons are represented by deduplicated internal boundary lines plus separate label records; seven source regions lack a usable label position/name. The first prototype uses **local GeoJSON sources**, which MapLibre tiles in its browser workers. This is a deliberately inspectable baseline for regional atlas evaluation; it is not a claim that transferring the full reference dataset is the final delivery architecture. PMTiles can replace geography delivery after we measure the representative experience. Background geography is not mixed with editable music records. ## Schemas All coordinates are WGS84 longitude, latitude. GeoJSON files are FeatureCollections. | File | Geometry and fields | | --- | --- | | `countries.geojson` | Polygons/MultiPolygons; `id`, `name`, `country`, `code`, numeric `rank`, `minzoom`, `color` | | `country-labels.geojson` | Points at upstream label positions; same country fields | | `states.geojson` | MultiLineString of deduplicated internal region boundaries; `id`, `name`, numeric `rank`, `minzoom` | | `state-labels.geojson` | Points at upstream label positions; `id`, `name`, `country`, `region`, `code`, numeric `rank`, `minzoom` | | `cities.geojson` | Points; `id`, `name`, `country`, `region`, numeric `rank`, `minzoom`, `population`, boolean `capital` | | `rivers.geojson`, `lakes.geojson` | Lines or polygons; `id`, `name`, numeric `rank`, `minzoom` | | `places.json` | Search array: `{ id, name, kind: 'city' \| 'country' \| 'region', country, region?, coordinates: [longitude, latitude], rank }` | Country and region labels use their upstream coordinates rather than arbitrary polygon centroids. Search contains geographic places independently of musical coverage. Cities appear progressively using population/administrative importance; Petrolina, Cali, Buenaventura, and Esmeraldas receive explicit prototype label priority so the evaluation examples remain easy to locate. ## Map-label font The map uses **Noto Sans Regular**, with prepared glyphs copied unmodified from [MapLibre demotiles](https://github.com/maplibre/demotiles/tree/601ae60796ceceda2cbd2ed3d2ea92d17a84be4b/font/Noto%20Sans%20Regular) at revision `601ae60796ceceda2cbd2ed3d2ea92d17a84be4b`. The local URL template is `/fonts/{fontstack}/{range}.pbf` and the exact style fontstack is `['Noto Sans Regular']`. The build includes Latin ranges 0–1023 and every additional Unicode range used by this atlas's displayed names. The supplied **SIL Open Font License 1.1** is preserved at `public/fonts/Noto Sans Regular/LICENSE.md`. Missing glyphs in the original font remain an upstream font limitation; including a Unicode range does not add glyphs the font never contained. The six prepared ranges are `0-255`, `256-511`, `512-767`, `768-1023`, `7680-7935`, and `8192-8447`. Geography and displayed English/transliterated place names have been validated to reference only these ranges. ## Commercial use and notices Natural Earth geography is public domain, and the Noto glyphs permit use in a commercial website under the OFL. This prototype's installed Next.js, React, React DOM, and MapLibre software likewise permits commercial use without a revenue threshold or per-view licensing fee. Preserve the applicable notices and font license when distributing the application. The full direct-runtime licenses and installed MapLibre dependency notices are reproduced in [THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md](THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md). ## Supplemental listening-region geography and attribution Geography for the new listening footprints adapts finer island and coastal source polygons below, alongside public-domain Natural Earth. Source geometry is clipped, simplified, merged and given a small atlas-scale edge allowance; it is not a surveyed shoreline or a statement of sovereignty. Some administrative coastal water can remain. Source links, exact downloads, hashes and individual licence metadata are preserved in research/listening-regions/extra-island-land.json and extra-coastal-land.json. The application serves static prepared shapes locally; no source API is called during browsing. geoBoundaries / William & Mary standardized the source files. Individual file licences were checked; OSM/ODbL, GADM and non-commercial alternatives were not imported. Original downloads, URLs and SHA-256 provenance are preserved in research/listening-regions/corrections/. Union, geographic selection, repair and display simplification are MuGlobe modifications. The Sertão outline is our working interpretation; IBGE does not endorse that cultural selection. The general MMD reuse policy is documented by IBGE in [technical/legal notes](https://www.ibge.gov.br/biblioteca/visualizacao/livros/liv102152.pdf). Geographic distinctions are supported by [Embrapa's 2021 synthesis](https://www.infoteca.cnptia.embrapa.br/infoteca/bitstream/doc/1133545/1/Potencialidades-da-Zona-da-Mata-e-do-Agreste-nordestinos-2021.pdf); its illustration was not traced. **Fonte: IBGE, Malhas Geográficas 2021.
