MUGLOBE · WORLD MUSIC ATLAS

Explore music around the world.

MuGlobe is a free interactive world music atlas. Choose a place on the globe to discover its music, explore genres and artists, and listen to recordings through YouTube. Read about musical traditions, their origins and connections in the MuGlobe music encyclopedia.

The map

NASA Blue Marble satellite imagery supplies the natural-color surface, with terrain and ocean-depth shading. This cloud-free composite is served by MuGlobe. It is regional-scale imagery, not a live view.

Natural Earth reference geography provides countries, states and provinces, rivers, lakes, and cities. It is generalized atlas data, not a street map. Place names and borders are shown progressively with zoom.

Regions describe geographic listening environments across cities, countryside and connected communities. Their outlines and musical descriptions are editable. Separate genre overlays illustrate musical connections to places. Region details include the musical explanation, geographic reasoning and sources. Finer island geography uses the attributed sources listed below.

The story

The purple salsa choke overlay is a schematic illustration of the journey Ed described. It does not assert dates, exact routes, or measured cultural coverage.

Listening and learning

Explore the globe and read the encyclopedia without an account. Playing recordings connects to YouTube. The encyclopedia brings together articles about places, genres, musicians, groups and instruments, with sources for further discovery. The collection continues to grow.
